ABOUT US

Our centre was established and started as a result of one common goal, to make a difference in the learning experiences of children. Our vision is to mobilise a generation of fluent readers that are able to read and read with comprehension. Our aim is to convey and teach the importance of phonics to as many educators, parents, carers and children as we possibly can. Improved reading skills cultivates a positive attitude toward reading and ultimately learning.

Serious About Learning Center is a place where your child can develop his/her skills and experience success leading to greater confidence and self-esteem.

We are excited about the learning opportunities we have to offer. Our programs include Reading and Communication Skills, Learning support, Handwriting, Tutoring (in all areas of the foundation phase) and Phonics workshops for adults.

For children, the road to success begins here!

We offer the following at our Center:

Learning support : Perceptual-motor skills

Using various strategies and activities, l focus on visual and auditory perceptual-motor skills. This includes hand-eye coordination, midline crossing etc…

More importantly is visual and auditory memory. If learners remember what their educator said or presented, they will be less unsure of what to do in class. There is a maximum of 2 learners per class.

Tutoring : in all learning areas of the foundation phase

Tutoring meaning focussing on their current class content as well as incorporating perceptual-motor activities to improve reading, writing, spelling and learning skills.

Teaching children to read, pronounce and articulate sounds correctly

Letter sound relationships to learn to read phonetically, always focusing on materials and resources presented within context. We provide an adaptive experience, evaluating their conceptual grasp of ideas first.

MATH TUTORING

Struggling with Maths can leave children feeling overwhelmed and discouraged.

A strong foundation is necessary to build a sturdy house, and the same is true when learning math. Without understanding fundamental math concepts, children won’t be able to progress in math.

A Math tutor will help your child to:

  • Improve numeracy skills
  • Build a strong number sense foundation
  • Encourage children to solve and think about problems with confidence
  • Equip children with problem solving skills
  • Explain math as a language
  • Improve children’s beliefs and attitude toward Math
  • Instill consistency – practice makes perfect!
  • Assist with homework
  • Prepare for tests and exams

Give your child a head start – Watch their confidence grow step by step – Celebrate life changing results and happy kids!

Our process starts with a free assessment at our Brooklyn centre where we get to know parent and child.

One day phonics workshop

A workshop designed to explain and teach educators, carers and parents the importance of phonics. The workshop includes written information explaining phonics and phonemic awareness as well as ample practical time to work through concepts of letter sound relationships, pronunciation and articulation in collaborative groups. The main focus will always be to sound letter sounds correctly.

Whilst assisting and working with adults they will also gain insight into strategies that can be used to teach children. The resources included in the material are colourful, relevant and were carefully designed to assist not only children but also their educators. Visual text used to explain written text are extremely important for children to better understand the meaning of words and the text they are reading (teaching in context).
